DID I DO THE RIGHT THING ? ( I )

This guy really turned out to be stupid. When I first met him he was so self-conscious, he was stammering when he talked with me. His face was red like a tomato and his grin was so permanent, I had a feeling his lips were actually fixed like that due to some disease. I felt discomfort making him so uneasy. I wanted to make him comfortable around me, therefore, I befriended him.

He was half my age. He was just 20 when I met him.

I found out that he was interested in books. I also found out that he was more into spiritualism. He was an ardent Buddhists. To make him comfortable I started talking about things he was interested in. I found out that he was very knowledgeable. For his age he was very well read and well informed.

As time passed by he was confident enough to confide in me that he was suffering from social anxiety, which, needless to say, was so discernable for everybody else but him. I suggested him to read some self-help books. I helped him get a library card. I found him two books - Feeling Good and Painfully Shy. He read them earnestly. I could see the change in him everyday. He was becoming bolder. He was abler to hold conversations with newly acquainted people. He was becoming more relaxed around new people.

He was much more happier than when I first met him. He began cracking jokes all the time. He would come up with such funny things to say, he would make us laugh all the time. I was getting comments from his relatives that I turned him a new leaf.

Did I do the right thing?
